You Need Surgery

That is what a doctor told Amy about two months ago. So we did what anybody else would do, we went to another doctor hoping to hear something else. Unfortunately we heard the exact same thing from the second doctor - foot surgery was the only option.

Amy has had a pain in her heel since she was pregnant with Cal. She ignored it and hoped it would go away over time. 17 months later it was only getting worse.

She had what is called Haglund's Deformity. (Note to other men - not a good idea to ever use the word deformity when describing any portion of your wife's body. This is only permissible because a trained medical professional used the term first.) A normal heel bone is basically round. Haglund's is an abnormal (careful with the use of this term as well) growth on the heel causing extra stress and pressure on the achilles tendon. Over time it can cause extreme damage to the tendon and a lot of pain. The only way to avoid that is surgery to cut off a portion of the heel bone. As unpleasant as that sounds it seemed like the better option.

So today was the day. Amy went under the knife at 7:00am. She woke up a couple of hours later with a huge cast on her foot. At this point, the small lump on her heel was minor in comparison. Now that we have to figure out what recovery is going to look like. She will be on crutches for 2 weeks and then 3 weeks with a walking boot. Not sure how 3 kids and a mom on crutches is going to work. Should make for some good blog material.

The doctor warned us that Amy would forget several details about today because of the medications. Sure enough, we have already the same conversation 3 times. She got prescriptions for 4 medications, 3 of which cause drowsiness. I think she is going to to sleep for the better part of the next couple of days and probably not going to remember much of anything that happens.

The kids are currently in Austin with Grammie and Poppa so they are in good hands and that will make the first few days of recovery much easier. We will be sure to keep you posted on the recovery process.
